The launch of Caffeine: Google brews up new search engine index

This week sees the launch of Caffeine, Google’s brand spankin new indexing system! For those not familiar with the old system, what it basically means is this…

When you search for something in Google you’re not in fact searching a ‘live’ web but an indexing system, which is kind of like a reference guide for Google that lets it know what’s relevant and what isn’t.

So why change it?

As we move into a ‘real-time’ era of blogging, forums and up to the minute news items, searchers want information that is accurate, current and relevant to their day. To match people’s expectations of the world wide web, Google is now indexing thousands of pages every second to bring users the most up-to date….well, everything basically!

The new system provides 50% fresher results for web searches than the last index, and is the largest collection of web content offered today.

  1. Paul Says:

However to allow for instantanios indexing, opposed to the old batch indexing system, they had to get rid of nearly 30% of their current index aka The (dreded) May Day Update. This meant than all longer tailed searches dropped off a cliff for larger sites such as ecommerce.

Google the little bugger; gives with one hand and takes with the other!
