Microsoft and Yahoo have this week agreed upon a deal which sees the two digital giants combine their expertise in an attempt to challenge the monopoly of Google in internet searching.
The deal, announced on Wednesday, will combine the powers of the 2nd and 3rd largest search engines with the aim to finally deliver a service that could have the potential to rival Google. Google currently holds a massive 90.6% market share of search traffic in the UK, compared with Yahoo having a 3.9% share and Microsoft’s Bing with 2.4%.
This deal follows Yahoo’s rejection of a $44.6 billion offer for the company from Microsoft last year.
The partnership will see Microsoft, which has recently overhauled its search engine, providing the search technology between both its own search facility www.Bing.com and all of the Yahoo sites. In return, Yahoo will handle all advertising sales. (more…)
